Terms of use, in plain English

These terms cover your use of Star By Face. They are written to be read rather than skimmed, and we have kept the legal language to a minimum. By using the site, you agree to what follows. If you disagree with any of it, the simplest option is not to use the site, which costs you nothing.

Not for identification

Star By Face is entertainment. It is not an identification tool.

Do not use this site, or anything it produces, to work out who an unknown person is, to confirm that a person is who they claim to be, or to make any decision about anyone. Specifically, you must not use it:

• to identify a person in a photograph, video, or any other image;
• as biometric verification, identity verification, or a security check;
• to screen, assess, or make decisions about job applicants, employees, tenants, customers, dates, or anyone else;
• in any law enforcement, immigration, surveillance, or investigative context;
• to claim that a person is, or is not, someone else.

The tool compares a face against a library of celebrity photos and ranks the closest ones. That is a narrow, deliberately unserious task. It cannot tell you who anyone is, and a match score out of 100 is a similarity score derived from comparing two sets of numbers. It is not a probability, not an accuracy rate, and not a confidence level.

Entertainment purposes only

Everything on this site is provided for fun. That includes the match results, the ranking, the scores, the blog posts, and any suggestion that you resemble a famous person. None of it is a statement of fact about you, your family, your ancestry, your appearance, or your future.

Please treat the results the way you would treat a novelty photo booth at a party. They are a conversation starter, not a finding.

No guarantee of anything

We do not guarantee that the site will work on your device, load quickly, or produce results you agree with. We do not guarantee that the celebrity library is complete, current, or representative, and we make no promise that a particular celebrity is included. We do not guarantee that the results are consistent between photos, between devices, or between visits.

We also make no scientific claim. The method used here, comparing face embeddings with cosine similarity, has not been validated as a measure of how alike two people look. Do not rely on the output for anything that matters.

Acceptable use

Use the site on yourself, or on people who have agreed to it. Beyond that, a few rules:

• Get consent. Do not upload a photo of another person without their permission. This applies to friends, family, coworkers, ex-partners, and strangers alike.
• Do not harass or defame anyone. Do not use a result to mock, intimidate, threaten, or spread claims about a person, and do not publish someone's result alongside statements about them that are untrue or harmful.
• Do not attempt identification. See the section above. This is the one restriction we care about most.
• Do not upload unlawful material. No images of minors in a sexual context, no non-consensual intimate imagery, no content that infringes anyone's rights, and nothing that breaks the law where you live.
• Do not attack the service. No scraping at volume, no automated abuse, no attempts to break, overload, or interfere with the site or the delivery network that serves it.
• Do not misrepresent the results. Do not present a match as proof of identity, as a biometric finding, or as anything other than an entertainment result.

Because the site runs entirely in your browser and we receive nothing, we have no practical way to police most of this. That does not make it acceptable, and it does not remove your responsibility. Some of these uses may also be unlawful in your jurisdiction regardless of these terms.

Intellectual property

The celebrity photographs in our library are the property of their photographers and rights holders. They are used here under free licences, meaning Creative Commons licences or public domain status. Each photo carries a credit naming its source and links to its Wikimedia Commons file page, and all of them are listed on the credits page. If you reuse a photograph you found through this site, you are responsible for complying with its licence, including any attribution requirement.

Celebrity names, likenesses, trademarks, and logos belong to their respective owners. Their appearance in the library or in a result does not imply any connection to this site.

This site is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any celebrity, and no celebrity has approved, reviewed, or commented on it. A match result is a mathematical comparison of two photographs. It is not an association with the person in either one.

The site itself, including its text, design, and code, belongs to its makers. You are welcome to link to it, quote briefly with a link back, and share your own results. You may not copy the site wholesale or present our content as your own.

The service is provided "as is"

Star By Face is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. That includes, to the extent the law allows, any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error free, secure, or free of harmful components. You use it at your own risk.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing here limits rights you have under mandatory consumer law where you live.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the makers of Star By Face are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, goodwill, or opportunity, arising out of or relating to your use of the site. This includes decisions you make or actions you take based on a match result, a score, or anything you read on this site.

Because the service is free and no payment changes hands, our total liability to you for any claim relating to the site is limited to zero, to the extent the law permits. If that seems harsh, consider what the site is: a free novelty tool with no contract, no account, and no revenue.

Availability and changes

We can change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the site at any time, including the celebrity library, the matching model, and these terms. We can also change these terms for any reason. When we do, the date at the bottom of this page changes. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.

We do not offer a service level agreement, an uptime commitment, or support obligations. This is a small independent project, not a paid service.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [jurisdiction to be confirmed], without regard to conflict of law rules. Any dispute arising from the use of this site will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of that place. If you are a consumer, this does not remove the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of your country of residence.

If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
