Your photo never leaves your device
Not "we delete it afterwards", not "we do not store it". There is no upload at all: the site is a folder of static files, and the model that reads your face is downloaded to you rather than your photo being sent to it. You can watch this happen in your browser's network panel.
What the number actually means
Every face, once processed, becomes a list of 128 numbers. Two faces that share a lot of structure end up with lists that point in a similar direction, and the angle between those lists is what we translate into a match score out of 100. The top match usually lands in the sixties to the mid eighties. That range is deliberate: in this kind of comparison, even a strong look-alike pair rarely sits far above it, so stretching the number upward would only make it less honest.
Two things follow from that. First, the score compares photographs, not people. Change the lighting, the angle or the decade and the number moves. Second, a low score is not a judgement about your face, it is a statement that the library did not contain someone with a very similar facial geometry. With about a thousand faces in the library, that happens.

How does Star By Face find my celebrity look alike?
Your browser detects the face in your photo, straightens and crops it, then converts it into a list of 128 numbers that describe facial structure. Those numbers are compared against the same kind of numbers for every celebrity in our library, and the closest matches are shown with a match score. All of it runs on your own device.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. There is no upload step and no server that receives images. The photo is read into your browser, processed in memory, and discarded when you close or reload the page. You can confirm this yourself: open your browser developer tools, watch the Network tab, and run a photo through. The only downloads are the site itself and the AI model.
How accurate is the match?
It is a similarity score, not a measurement of how alike you really are. Two photos of the same person taken years apart often score lower than two photos of different people taken at the same event. Treat the result as a fun prompt, not a fact.
What makes a good photo?
Face the camera, use even lighting, avoid sunglasses, hats and heavy filters, and make sure your face takes up a decent part of the frame. Photos with one person in them work far better than group shots.
Which celebrities are in the library?
Around a thousand well known actors, musicians, athletes, models and presenters, mostly from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Ireland. The reference photos come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences, and we deliberately chose pictures taken in the middle of each person’s career, because matching works best when both faces are at a similar stage of life.
Does it cost anything?
No. There is no account, no paywall and no ad network. The site is static files on a CDN, which costs almost nothing to run.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. It works in current mobile browsers, including iOS Safari and Android Chrome. Processing takes a little longer on older phones, and the first visit downloads the model over your connection, after which it is cached.
